Bound volume containing the manuscript, in the hand of Henry Reed, of a course of lectures he gave concerning the portion of modern English history illustrated in Shakespeare's historical dramas, delivered in College Hall, at the University of Pennsylvania, from 8 December 1846 to 1 March 1847. Lecture 8 has a note in the hand of Henry Reed stating that it was read to an audience of the inmates of the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane, on the evening of 19 November 1849. The lectures were published in their entirety after Reed's death, under the editorship of his brother William B. Reed, in: Lectures on English history and tragic poetry, as illustrated by Shakespeare. (Philadelphia: Parry & McMillan, 1855), p. 13-341. The manuscript contains notes in the hand of William Reed, usually initialed by him, comprising his editor's notes for the publication. Some of the latter notes are on separate leaves that are bound or tipped in (occasionally with a quotation written in a different hand). Some of the emendations within the text, in a darker ink, evidently comprise editing by William Reed. There are occasional abbreviated notations referring to examination of the manuscript by George Allen (Ex'd by G.A.); some pencilled queries or suggested emendations are evidently by Allen (e.g. at the beginning of Lecture 4; in the introduction to the published book William Reed acknowledges the assistance of Allen in the preparation of the manuscript for publication). Please note that the last lecture in this volume, ending on p. 39, is incomplete; the last page, numbered 40, was mistakenly bound into a volume of miscellaneous fragments contained in the present collection (see Ms. Coll. 859, Box 9).
